Throughout your lifetime you probably have heard a number of myths about your health and fitness. With some facts seeming too absurd to be true, and others actually hold some accuracy, it is hard to know what to trust. If you just want to get to the bottom of it, here are some of those myths debunked:

Running in the rain will make you sick…

False! The common cold or flu is actually caused when you come into contact with the virus. Being exposed to the rain may, however, decrease your body temperature, which makes you more susceptible to developing the illness. Essentially, the rain and cold weather makes it harder to fight any viruses that you may already be harbouring in your system.

If anything, regular exercise improves your overall health. Light or moderate running can even strengthen your immune system by aiding in the circulation of protective cells around the body.

If you want to continue running in the rain, but are concerned about having a weak immune system, check out some Vitamin C supplements that may help guard you from illnesses.

Coffee stunts your growth…

False! If you’re worried about trading in your morning cup of coffee to add a few more inches to your height, you will be happy to hear that you actually may not have to! There is little evidence that suggests that drinking coffee stunts your growth.

People believe in this myth because research has shown a link between the intake of caffeine, and the reduced calcium absorption in the bones. However, the effects are so minimal, that it can be offset by simply adding some milk to your brew.

Though, if you are anxious about getting taller, there are some vitamins and supplements that can promote growth.

Cracking your knuckles leads to arthritis…

False! There has been little to no research that suggests that cracking your knuckles and joints can lead to arthritis. However, if you experience pain while doing so, it may be an indication for a bigger problem.

The “pop” you hear is simply caused by the bursting of bubbles in the fluids in the joints. This is caused by the negative pressure created when the bones are forced apart — either through a pulling or pushing action.

Bone health is, however, a problem for many. As you age, your bones may start weakening and deteriorating. If this is something that worries you, supplements like Vitamin D help in calcium absorption, strengthening your bones.
